Volunteer Spotlight: Judge Bob Downing

This month’s VIPS Volunteer Spotlight nominee Judge Bob Downing says,  “I don’t ask anyone to do something I wouldn’t do, so I volunteered for VIPS.”

I had been a judge on the District Court in Baton Rouge for fifteen years and recently elected to the First Circuit Court of Appeal where my hours were more flexible.  One of my favorite quotes is from Williams Jennings Bryan, the great Populist, who said, “The way you tell a sane man from a crazy man is you put a bucket under a faucet and tell them to dip out the bucket.  A sane man will turn off the faucet”.  I don’t ask anyone to do something I wouldn’t do, so I volunteered for VIPS.  My first grader went from below reading level to the Principal’s List that year and I’ve been coming back for about 16 years.
